Studio Outings presents:

Starting, not from the head

10th July – 24th July
An exhibition by Siân Torrington and Expressive Drawing Class artists.

Opening night (drinks and treats provided): Wednesday 10th July 5.30pm

Special one-off drawing class: Saturday 20th July, 2pm – 4pm (bookings essential) (Please note this class is now cancelled)

For the last two years, Wellington artist Siân Torrington has been helping others dissolve their blocks to creativity through drawing classes. With energetic exercises that encourage risk-taking and experiment, she has been shaking up ideas of ‘what is a good drawing’, while building a community of people who are sharing drawing adventures together.

“In the last class of every course, we all bring our drawings in. The floor is carpeted with expressive life drawing – bold charcoal swirls, delicate personal watercolour webs. A huge document of what we have experienced and made together. We’d really like to share some of it.”

Starting, not with the head  is an exhibition that celebrates our adventures together: trying it out, and discovering ways to express ourselves. We are sharing drawings made by students in class, as well as a new series of abstract and figurative works for sale by Siân Torrington, made in response to class experiences. This format recognises the teacher as learner; a fellow traveller on this voyage of discovery and risk.

The exhibition title was conceived collectively, and refers to a pointer Siân often gives in class, to start drawing from somewhere else on the body other than the head. The idea is to challenge the way we prioritise the mind, with its preconceived ideas of what things look like, and instead jump into lived experience, which is so much more surprising, challenging, and fun.

We describe our drawings as:

“Active, curly, muscley, beautiful, flowy, warm, different.” We create “sassy spirals, rain in a storm, stocky giants, and thick, dark, velvety and delicious” drawings.

We invite you to come and meet all of the artists, hear about their experiences in class, celebrate learning — and take up an opportunity to find out more and try it out for yourself!

Siân says: “It is hard to face down what we’ve been told about who is creative / what good art is / who is allowed to be an artist; to stop being scared and come to class and try it out.”

During the exhibition, Siân is offering a one-off, koha drawing class, on Saturday 20th July, 2pm – 4pm, at Vincent’s Art Workshop. Places limited, bookings essential, contact siantorrington@gmail.com

(Please note this class is now cancelled)

Also at the opening, to dissolve more blocks, will be Sam Broad, picture framer, to offer guidance and advice through the framing process, for free!
